Talking Horses: Win Tingle Creek Chase day tickets

27th November 2012

Win Tingle Creek Chase day tickets plus the latest news and today’s best bets in our daily racing blog

Tuesday’s best bets, by Chris Cook

I’m really warming to Charlie Longsdon as a trainer, particularly since he got Paintball to win the Imperial Cup on his first run since a breathing op. Longsdon’s total number of winners has gone up from 17 in 2009-10 (his fourth year with a licence) to 44 the next season and then 69 last season.

He has picked a most difficult point in the economic cycle to establish himself but is succeeding just the same. He’s already on 25 this term, 10 of them having come this month, and he might get another two from the seven races at Lingfield today.

Longsdon’s best chance is Pete The Feat (3.00), who seems thoroughly revived for moving to his yard from that of Anna Newton-Smith. He has won three staying handicap chases on the bounce, the last two with ridiculous ease, and a 7lb penalty ought not to stop him today.

Heavy going is a possible concern, since his three recent wins were on better surfaces, but he won on heavy when he last encountered it, at Folkestone in January last year. Another difference is that Longsdon, who used Noel Fehily for his last two runs, puts up Gavin Sheehan today to take 7lb off, which will deter some punters.

Sheehan is Charlie Mann’s conditional and is already looking for his 12th winner of the season. This is his first ride for Longsdon and I think he and Pete The Feat are very backable at 11-10.

Earlier, Longsdon’s Topaze Collonges (1.00) is 9-4 to beat a motley collection of rivals. His own claims would be none too strong if his recent form were the full measure of his ability but he got in his own way by jumping left at Fontwell and Towcester, so this left-handed circuit may suit better. His only win to date came at Plumpton.

I’m possible being a bit perverse but I can see a case for Shesha Bear (12.30) turning around the form with Hidden Identity in the opener. Hidden Identity was the established talent, having her fifth run over hurdles when the pair met here two weeks ago and she duly won by an eased-down three lengths.

But Shesha Bear put up an excellent effort on her hurdles debut to be a running-on second and is now 7lb better off with the winner. Hadden Frost took her around the outside of a big field that day and there is scope for a much more positive ride this time, now that we know she can cope with this new game.

She makes a bit of appeal at 5-2, with the rest of the field seemingly making up the numbers.

The novice chase has a similar shape to it, with Sire De Grugy the favourite after chasing home Captain Conan on his second start over fences. That certainly looks like good form but, though he copes well with soft, he didn’t enjoy his only previous taste of heavy and must give 7lb to a useful sort in Cantlow (2.00).

Cantlow took time to get the hang of it on his chasing debut at Warwick but was going on at the finish and the layout of this track may give him a better chance to build up for a big finish.

Tipping competition, day two

Sandiuk bounced out to a fine start by picking both Arkose (11-2) and Knockfierna (11-4). Dancing Daffodil (3-1) eluded all but genesismama57, 72luca and Harrytheactor.

Today, we’d like your tips, please, for these races: 1.00 Lingfield, 2.30 Lingfield, 3.00 Lingfield.

This week’s prize is a pair of Premier enclosure tickets to Sandown for Tingle Creek day on Saturday 8 December, when we hope to see the clash between the mighty Sprinter Sacre and the upstart Sanctuaire. If you don’t win this week, you can buy tickets here.

As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today but you will start on -3.

In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
