26th September 2012

The latest news and best bets in our daily racing blog plus our weekly tipping competition

Wednesday’s best bets, by Will Hayler

A total of 11mm of overnight rain at Goodwood has turned the going soft at Goodwood, while the rain has even finally reached Perth where conditions have eased slightly too. But Newmarket continues to live a charmed life weatherwise with just 1mm arriving and the going remains soft ahead of the weekend’s big racing.

Sweet Deal (2.00) has turned in two highly eyecatching performances in his starts so far and is right at the top of my list of handicappers to follow as soon as he gets his mark, but I’ve been thrown to see him at the head of the betting for his maiden at Goodwood. Is this the plan after all? I strongly suspect that he has the talent to take this, even though his bare form might not suggest as much.

Ultimate Destiny (2.35) would appreciate being able to get an uncontested lead in the following contest (not guaranteed with Three Bards in the line-up) and hasn’t been seen to best effect in his last three starts. The softened ground is definitely in his favour.

Paul Hanagan gets the chance to atone for a nightmare time aboard Ektihaam (3.40) in the Prix du Jockey-Club last time out. The colt was all but brought down in scrimmaging as his jockey tried unsuccessfully to bore his way through the pack on the inside rail and has needed more than three months off since. But, with first-time blinkers unlikely to hinder his chances, Ektihaam clearly has the raw talent to take the Listed Foundation Stakes.

John Dunlop’s announcement of his retirement at the end of the season has come at the same time as a dramatic revival in form for the yard. Having barely been able to train a winner in the spring and early summer, Dunlop has his team flying again and Mountain Range (8.20) is fancied to return to form at Kempton. He was given too much to do off a slow pace last time, but may get the faster fractions he prefers in this line-up.

Tipping competition - day three

Rain, non-runners, limericks and more non-runners. Tuesday was a crazy day in the life of the Talking Horses tipping competition, but one that featured disappointingly few winners. Nobody found 20-1 winner Going Nowhere Fast and even Micky Hammond’s 50th birthday winner Only Orsenfoolies at 11-4 failed to prove popular. Then things went from bad to worst for Diegoisgod, ToffeeDan1 and Blitzwing who, for a variety of reasons, lost out when Leeds beat Everton. Ouch. Things can only get better.

This week’s prize is a copy of Racing Crazy, a collection of the best work of David Ashforth, the Racing Post’s senior, respected and much-loved writer. If you don’t win, you can buy a copy here.

Today, we’d like your tips, please, for these races: 3.10 Goodwood, 4.15 Goodwood, 5.05 Perth.

As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers.

In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day. You may join in late but will do so from a starting bank of -6.00.

Good luck!
