Talking Horses: Latest news and best bets in our daily racing blog

2nd November 2012

The final field for Saturday’s Charlie Hall is in, plus best bets for today and the climax of our weekly tipping competition

Today’s best bets, by Chris Cook

The field for tomorrow’s Charlie Hall has cut up rather badly at the overnight declaration stage, with just six remaining. There will be no Diamond Harry or Weird Al, both of whom will need more time. The final list:

Master Of The Hall Nicky Henderson
Midnight Chase Neil Mulholland
Time For Rupert Paul Webber
Silviniaco Conti Paul Nicholls
Planet Of Sound Philip Hobbs
Wayward Prince Hilary Parrott

Diamond Harry appears to have been crocked again, although details are not offered. His owner, Paul Duffy, has told the Press Association: “Unfortunately, he’s picked up a slight injury and it means he won’t be able to go to Wetherby, I’m afraid. It’s nothing serious I’m told, but the bad luck continues.

“It’s frustrating, but I’m getting used to the phone call leading up to a race telling me he’s had another setback. There’s a chance he could go to Wincanton [for the Badger Ales Trophy] next week, if he recovers in time, or he could just go straight to Newbury [for the Hennessy Gold Cup on 1 December]. That is on our radar.”

Donald McCain has said of Weird Al: “He’s fine. I just think he needs another couple of weeks before we get him back on the racecourse. He could go to Haydock [for the Betfair Chase].”

At Wetherby today, Bless The Wings (2.00) may be the best bet on the card at 9-2 for the Listed Handicap Chase, which that noted twicer Fistral Beach somehow managed to win last year. First time and fresh seems a good time to catch this seven-year-old, who scored a a 15-runner novice handicap chase at Exeter on his reappearance last year and added a similar race at Cheltenham two months later.

He’s another 7lb higher than for that latest win, having been well beaten twice since then. The weight wouldn’t stop him if he was ready to go and it is surprisingly difficult to make a case for many of the others.

Alan King has started the season well, with six wins from 24 runners last month, his most productive October since 2008. The capable Wayne Hutchinson, on board for the Cheltenham win, rides again because Choc Thornton has gone to Uttoxeter to steer Call Me A Star through her hurdles debut.

Sean Levey got dropped on his bottom at Kempton last night when one of his mounts clipped heels in the straight but he rode again later on the card and is presumably fine to ride at Newmarket today. He trails Amy Ryan by eight in the race for the apprentice title, in which he seems her only potential challenger, and should get a winner on the 8-15 shot Ninjago in the 3.20pm race.

But Ryan, who is getting fewer rides than Levey just now, may have had a precious winner in the opener, for which Wotalad (12.40) is being overlooked at 8-1. He was 40-1 and held up at the back for much of his debut at Pontefract last week but ran on takingly in the closing stages to be a never-nearer sixth of 12. His trainer, Richard Whitaker, can get maiden winners, though they generally need a run first. The market-leaders are from the Meehan and Channon yards but have already shown themselves to be limited.

A mile and a half up the Rowley Mile on soft ground is right up the street of Require (2.10). Raised 2lb for her latest win, she can score again for Luca Cumani and Kirsty Milczarek at around 4-1.

Paddy Power tipping competition, day five

Copshaw found only losers yesterday but it seems he will not be punished for it. Only factormax found Whingeing Willie (14-1), while Tempest Fugit (16-1) was missed by everyone except aj111jackson and tanias. Even now, none of those are close to Copshaw. Xwireman, moidadem and Ellandback were the only ones to pick Present To You (8-1).

For today’s thrilling climax, we’d like your tips, please, for these races: 3.10 Wetherby, 3.55 Newmarket, 6.15 Wolverhampton. Please note that, from next week, the race-times for our competition will tend to be earlier than they have been through the summer.

GET THOSE TIPS IN EARLY! In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.

This week’s prize, generously offered by the bookmaker Paddy Power, is a pair of tickets to Cheltenham for all three days of next month’s meeting, which they sponsor. That’s Friday 16th, Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th November, with the highlight of the meeting being the Paddy Power Gold Cup.

As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be four each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today, but you will start on -12.
