Football transfer rumours: Arsenal in for Icelandic star?

27th September 2012

Today’s fluff knew this exact thing would happen

Theo Walcott may have won a bargaining chip in his Arsenal contract negotiations after scoring twice against Coventry on Wednesday night, but Arsène Wenger wasted no time in reminding the strik… winger that there is only one man in charge. “I’m not against it,” rebuffed Wenger when questioned about a more central role for Walcott. “I’m not against it at all but we try and at the moment there is big competition up front. His time will come for that and at the moment we have to be a bit patient.”

One hopes Walcott’s demands to be played as a striker will not intensify after that brace, a performance that surely drew inspiration from his own 2010 novel TJ and the Cup Run, where: “TJ and his friends … are about to play in the semi-final of the Cup, and Mr Potter’s really bad tactics nearly lose them the match. With everything they’ve trained for hanging in the balance, can TJ and his friends turn things around and win?

Like TJ, Walcott channeled his frustrations into an excellent display instead of throwing his toys out of the pram and challenging Mr Potte… Wenger to fisticuffs behind the Emirates bike shed. On second thoughts, perhaps he was spurred on by speculation that his manager is tracking the Icelandic striker Aron Johannsson, who has been in superb form for AGF in the Danish Superliga this season.

Kevin Strootman has put Manchester United on alert by announcing that he intends to leave PSV Eindhoven during the January transfer window. The Holland international is valued at £20m by the club and with United looking short in central midfield, Sir Alex Ferguson could step up his interest in the 22-year-old.

Chelsea, meanwhile, look set to be thwarted in their attempts to bring Benfica’s Oscar Cardozo to Stamford Bridge, with the striker expected to extend his stay in Portugal and add a £47m buy-out clause to a new contract. Chelsea are short of forwards and Roman Abramovich has got previous in splashing £50m on a striker, so expect to see Cardozo supping London Pride down King’s Road come next year. The Paraguayan was also understood to be on Everton’s radar but at £47m, it’s safe to say there is more chance of Wayne Rooney returning to Goodison this season.

Manchester City may loan out midfielder Abdi Ibrahim, with a number of Premier League clubs including Norwich, Wigan, Southampton and Reading in the running for his signature. City are also hoping to let midfielder Abdul Razak leave on a short term deal after their defeat to Aston Villa in the League Cup on Tuesday, or as the Daily Mirror put it: MAN CITY TO FARM OUT RAZAK AFTER CAPITAL ONE CUP FACE-PLANT.

It could be a similar situation at West Ham, where Sam Allardyce could let Jordan Spence, Dan Potts and Rob Hall depart on loan after their loss to Wigan.

Galatasaray are plotting a surprise move for Real Madrid’s out-of-favour midfielder Kaká, who remains on the periphery in Spain under José Mourinho. But if it is a career resurrection the Brazilian is after, then he should look no further than the Newcastle Jets in Australia. He would be a tough act to follow, mind.
