Five things on England’s mind in India | Alison Mitchell

2nd November 2012

With two warm-up matches left, England have a few things to finalise before the first Test with India, which starts on 15 November

What to do if Steve Finn’s injury doesn’t clear up

Finn won’t feature in the second warm-up match against Mumbai A, which starts on Saturday, as he begins a programme of rehab on his strained right thigh. If he is to play in the first Test then he must get fit in time to feature in the final four- day warm-up match in Ahmedabad, which starts as soon as Thursday. That is not a lot of time, hence fears in the camp that he will not be ready, but both Tim Bresnan and Graham Onions are likely to get run-outs in the build up to 15 November and Stuart Broad will come in on Saturday having been named captain of the side.

Who will partner Alastair Cook?

Nick Compton seems to be England’s preferred choice to open the batting with Cook in Ahmedabad but, after he made a three-ball duck against India A, their decision-making may be clouded if the Somerset batsman doesn’t score runs in the second warm-up match. It is expected that Yorkshire’s Joe Root will get a chance on Saturday, so with Cook already having a century under his belt it’s possible he could be rested, with both Compton and Root playing together.

Getting Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell to make the most of time in the middle

Alongside Compton, the other two batsmen who failed to spend meaningful time in the middle against India A were Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell. Both fell to the part-time spin of Yuvraj Singh – Pietersen memorably so. Bell made just five off six balls while Pietersen’s eventful 23 off 24 balls summed up everything that is good and not so good about Kevin the batsman. He gave the innings “oomph”, as Samit Patel described it, but it was all too brief in the context of a first-class game.

Knocking over the lower order

England’s bowlers have suffered before when the hard work has been done up front but then the ball goes soft and the wicket flattens out. India A were reduced to 190 for six after lunch on the opening day of the first warm-up match only for a 110 run seventh-wicket partnership between Irfan Pathan and Manoj Tiwary to stabilise the innings. In an ideal world England need to put their foot on the throat and keep it there.

Making sure the KP situation stays low-key

It is the buzz word whenever any player is asked about Kevin Pietersen’s “reintegration” into the England dressing room. “It just feels normal” … “It’s business as usual” … “He’s the same old Kev.” So far, Pietersen’s presence around the England camp has been low key and the players and management will no doubt want to keep it that way. A tour of India is rarely quiet, but further distractions are the last thing they need. © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
