Talking Horses: The latest news and best bets in our daily racing blog

6th September 2012

The latest news and best bets in our daily racing blog plus our weekly tipping competition

Today’s best bets, by Chris Cook

So it didn’t quite happen for Sir Mark Prescott’s Welsh Bard at Kempton last night. As you can see here he couldn’t reel in a 20-1 shot from Amanda Perrett’s yard, which wouldn’t have been top of many punters’ lists before the off.

Inexperience may have cost Welsh Bard to some extent, though he looks a pretty steady conveyance. A galloping turf track will surely suit better.

Talking of big, slow boats, Galleon (4.40) is a fair bet at 3-1 for Haydock’s staying handicap. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, he also was made to look a bit one-paced at Kempton two runs ago but managed to get off the mark at the fourth attempt at Catterick last month. The runner-up, beaten three and a half lengths, won a maiden on his next start by almost as far.

The Scotch Corner circuit looked a little on the tight side for Galleon and Haydock should suit better. It needs to if he’s to beat older horses from a mark of 86 but this is a son of Galileo who has four winning siblings, including two trained by Stoute to win their handicap debuts off 81 and 86.

Ed McMahon’s two-year-olds are returning a level-stakes profit for the third year in a row and his Winning Express (3.15) is my pick for Salisbury’s Dick Poole. She was fancied for her Sandown debut but ran green and lost her place before powering home for the win.

The third and fourth won next time and Winning Express should be better with today’s extra furlong. The Racing Post’s tissue said 7-1 but she has already been backed down to 9-2 on Betfair as I type. It’s still not a bad price but I wouldn’t be taking a point less.

Gerard Butler hasn’t had much of a year but August was his most productive month since April with four winners at a 22% strike-rate. His Nordic Quest (8.10) hasn’t been seen since his successful handicap debut in April but can follow up at Kempton from a 6lb higher mark.

Nordic Quest won by three and three-quarter lengths that day and the next three horses home have all managed to win since (one of them in a hurdle race, in fairness), as have the sixth and seventh. He really appreciated the step up to a mile and a half that day and, while there are other horses worth respecting in the line-up, I’m surprised that this one is 15-2.

Tipping competition, day four

Jskibs continues his excellent week with Iguacu (4-1), though his lead was cut to three points by Mulldog, who found Cheery Cat (9-1). JahLion was the only one to get Red Whisper (12-1).

Today, we’d like your tips, please, for these races: 3.25 Sedgefield, 3.45 Salisbury, 9.10 Kempton.

This week’s prize is a pair of grandstand tickets to the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup at Ayr on Saturday 22 September, kindly offered by William Hill.

As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominatedraces, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you can do so today but you will start on -9.

In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be thetipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
