Sam Tomkins shines for Wigan in the 52-10 victory at Wakefield

8th July 2012

• St Helens earn last-gasp win at Widnes
• Huddersfield outplayed by Castleford

Sam Tomkins starred with a 24-point haul as Wigan extended their lead to five points at the summit of the Stobart Super League with a comprehensive 52-10 victory at Wakefield.

Wakefield took an early lead through a Peter Fox try but Wigan, who were superb throughout, responded in style to take the win as both Tomkins and George Carmont each ran in a hat-trick of tries.

St Helens snatched a stunning last-gasp 24-23 victory at Widnes to climb back to third place in the table as they stretched their unbeaten run to five matches.

However, it needed a 79th-minute try from Josh Jones and a touchline conversion from Lee Gaskell with the last kick of a thrilling encounter to earn Saints both points.

Huddersfield were totally outplayed away to Castleford who gave their best performance this season in the 52-6 win.

Huddersfield’s slump continued with their seventh defeat in eight Super League games before next Sunday’s Challenge Cup semi-final against Warrington.

Salford began life after the departing Matty Smith with a 24-22 victory over Hull KR at Craven Park.

Just two days after the Reds announced Smith was leaving to join the League leaders Wigan, his former team-mates put in a solid performance to give them back-to-back wins.
