London 2012 hockey: Team GB’s Kate Walsh returns to Olympic Village

1st August 2012

• GB hockey captain fractured jaw against Japan
• 32-year-old underwent operation to insert plate

Great Britain’s women’s hockey captain Kate Walsh has returned to the Olympic Village after spending three nights in hospital with a fractured jaw.

The 32-year-old has had an operation to insert a titanium plate in the left side of her face after being hit by a stick in GB’s opening win over Japan.

It is understood she left the Royal London hospital on Wednesday morning to rejoin her team-mates, who play Belgium on Thursday.

No decision has been taken yet on whether Walsh will play any further part in the Games but the coach Danny Kerry has said she will be fitness-tested beforehand and he will also assess her overall welfare before coming to a conclusion.

The medical advice received by the team is that there is nothing to prevent her playing and Kerry said on Tuesday the surgeon had told him the jaw was now actually stronger as a result of having the plate inserted.
