England face Bairstow fitness fears

2nd November 2012

• Wicketkeeper-batsman undergoing fitness test
• Matt Prior may endure heavy warm-up schedule

England are waiting on the results of a fitness test on Jonny Bairstow, which could further disrupt their preparations for the first Test against India.

The wicketkeeper-batsman has tweaked a thigh muscle meaning Matt Prior has been put on standby to play in the second warm-up match against Mumbai A, which starts on Saturday.

England’s plan was to rest Prior, who kept wicket during the three-day game against India A and scored a punchy half century, then bring him back for the four-dayer which precedes the first Test in Ahmedabad.

Prior would doubtless still be required to play in that match, and if he is forced to play over the next three days as well, he will have undergone a hefty and undesirable workload before the Test series even begins.

England still have concerns over Steven Finn, whose right thigh strain could yet rule him out of the first Test, which starts on 15 November. © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
