Capital One Cup round-up: Swansea survive scare at Crawley

25th September 2012

• Garry Monk goal saves Premier League side’s blushes
• Swindon surprise Burnley but no upset at Southampton

A last-gasp Garry Monk goal helped Swansea avoid embarrassment with a 3-2 win at Crawley on Tuesday. The Premier League side were 2-1 down in the second half but equalised through Danny Graham’s close-range header and, with extra-time looming, Monk headed home Wayne Routledge’s corner. Swindon had a 3-1 home victory over Burnley, who are a league above them in the Championship. Paul Benson and Andy Williams gave Swindon a 2-0 half-time lead and, although Charlie Austin pulled one back for Burnley, Troy Archibald-Henville sealed the win with seven minutes remaining. At St Mary’s two goals by Jay Rodriguez for Southampton – his first for the club – were enough to see off Sheffield Wednesday in a 2-0 win while Middlesbrough beat Preston 3-1 at Deepdale with goals from Emmanuel Ledesma, Marouane Zemmama and Richard Smallwood. A spectacular strike by Stephen Darby just before the end of extra-time allowed Bradford to scrape a 3-2 home win over Burton. © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
